The Missouri Humanities Council's READ from the START program is centered on the joy of family reading. It is based on the conviction that parents are a child's first and most influential teachers, and that the love of books and stories begins at birth. When parents take pleasure in books, that pleasure is conveyed to the child. Children who grow up hearing stories and looking at books fall in love with language.

November is Read First! Month in La Plata
"Clickety Clack" on the Community Reading Track will be the theme of La Plata's Read First! month. Building on the community's enthusiam for trains, a variety of fun train-themed activities will take place at the Silver Rails Event Center on November 6 from 5-7pm.  The event is free and open to the public.  For the dates and locations of other Read First! activities taking place in La Plata, go to the calendar on this site. Read First! Cuba
Cuba mayor Kenny Killeen has proclaimed that Read First! Cuba will be celebrated from October 27, 2008 through November 21, 2008. The Crawford County R-II Schools, with support from the Missouri Humanities Council, the Crawford County Foundation, the Recklein Memorial Library, the All Aboard Learning Center, Cuba Head Start and other local organizations, will celebrate Read First! Cuba with activities designed to encourage family reading.  Read First! Cuba will kick-off at a community celebration on October 27 at 5:30pm at Cuba High School. Workshops and special story times will be held throughout the month in Cuba. For more information on dates and locations of Read First! events, see the calendar or call Laura at 573-885-2534 ext 1199.  All events are free of charge, but reservations are required.
